Frequently asked questions

About this SSOC unit and the Food & Beverage occupational cluster

What traceability obligations exist for food imports?

SFA requires traceability records for imported food. Importers must register with SFA and maintain records of source, batch, and distribution for each consignment.

Do I need a licence from the Singapore Food Agency?

Most food processing, manufacturing, and retail activities require a licence from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). The exact licence type depends on whether you import, process, store, or sell food products.

What hygiene and safety standards apply?

SFA enforces food hygiene regulations, including the Environmental Public Health (Food Hygiene) Regulations. Premises must meet layout, sanitation, and temperature-control requirements.

Is halal certification relevant under this code?

Halal certification by MUIS (Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura) is voluntary but often essential for businesses serving halal-conscious markets. It is separate from the SSIC classification itself.

What is SSIC and why does it matter?

The Singapore Standard Industrial Classification (SSIC) is the national system for categorising business activities. It is mandatory at ACRA registration and is used by IRAS, MOM, and other government agencies for tax, licensing, statistical, and policy purposes.

Do I need to register with this SSIC code?

Every business entity registered with ACRA must select at least one SSIC code that best describes its principal economic activity. You can declare up to two codes — one primary and one secondary — via BizFile+.
